"My thoughts are always about film," he says, and here he has written thirty-three richly suggestive pieces elaborating ideas for films as yet unproduced. Beautifully translated by William Arrowsmith, That Bowling Alley on the Tiber reveals a master of cinema in a new role--that of an accomplished and sensitive writer. "Plangent, haunting and refreshingly tough-minded.[Antonioni] is asking the questions that wiry serious film maker will have to ask if the cinema is ever to prove as hospitable to ideas as it is to the great god Action."--The New York Times Book Review "These writings, like his films, pair luminous landscapes with ethereal tales. These are clearly working notes, and they are as interesting for their analysis of the director's methods as for their literary content."--Library Journal About the Author and Translator: Michelangelo Antonioni has gained an international following with such films as L'Avventura, La notte, Blow-up and The Passenger. Descrizione libro New York City, NY: Oxford University Press, 1985. Hardcover. Condizione libro: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 208 pages. Published in 1985. Rare Michelangelo Antonioni collectible set. A fine copy of his only collection of stories and ideas for future films, "That Bowling Alley On The Tiber", with a rare vintage publicity photograph, signed by Michelangelo Antonioni. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michelangelo Antonioni's "Quel bowling sul Tevere" in a felicitous English translation. "In this evocative book, Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the world's greatest directors, gives us a rare glimpse inside the creative mind. He has written thirty-three richly suggestive pieces elaborating ideas for films as yet unproduced. Reveals a master of cinema in a new role, that of an accomplished and sensitive writer" (Publisher's blurb). "These writings, like his films, pair luminous landscapes with ethereal tales. These are clearly working notes, and they are as interesting for their analysis of the director's methods as for their literary content" (Library Journal). Some of the stories were eventually realized as the film director's last full-length film, "Beyond The Clouds", which the ailing Antonioni directed with the indispensable assistance of Wim Wenders, the great German film director. An absolute "must-have" title for Michelangelo Antonioni collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. It comes with a 5 X 7 inch vintage publicity photograph, indicated/stamped as such on verso ("Propriedad de Regino Boti Nov 17 1960 Servicio Fotografico"), which is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen in front by Michelangelo Antonioni. Made for and distributed on a restricted basis to members of the press (for reproduction in magazines, newspapers, and other printed media), the vintage print remains in excellent condition, is encased in a protective plastic sleeve, and is eminently suitable for framing. Antonioni's signature is vintage-1960, not his much later one after his massive stroke. As such, it is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen: Bold, assured, elegant. As is sadly well-known, the director's signature deteriorated dramatically after his stroke. As far as we know, this is the only such set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare set thus. The greatest Italian film director of the 20th century. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 019503676X. Signed by Author.
