JOHNSON" AND HIS BIOGRAPHICAL SERIES "WHAT A NEWSPAPER REPORTER REMEMBERS", THAT IS A REMINISCENCE OF AN EXPERIENCE WHEN HE WAS A REPORTER IN GERMANY AND MET ONE OF "THE IRISH BRIGADE" WHO HAD SIDED WITH THE GERMAN CAUSE DURING WORLD WAR 1. THE PAPER'S HEADLINE IS "IRISH TRAITOR CONFESSES." THERE IS A FRONT PAGE PHOTO OF THE SEVEN IRISH BRIGADE SOLDIERS WHO WERE SUBSEQUENTLY HANGED FOR THEIR DESERTION FROM THE BRITISH ARMY. ALSO CONTAINS BEN HECHT'S ATTEMPT TO JUSTIFY HIS BOOK "FANTAZIUS MALLARE" WITH WALLACE SMITH'S EROTIC DRAWINGS AFTER BEING ACCUSED OF OBSCENITY, LEWDNESS AND DEPRAVITY BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT CENSORS. BEN HECHT CLAIMS THAT THE BOOK IS AN AN ARTISTIC ENDEAVOR AND NOT A LASCIVIOUS, SALACIOUS OR OBSCENE PUBLICATION. HECHT AND SMITH WERE FINED AND THE BOOK WAS LABELED AS OBSCENE BY THE COURTS. THAT ONLY HELPED PROMOTE SUBSEQUENT EDITIONS OF THE BOOK BY THE PUBLISHER COVICI - FRIEDE.
