This is a carbon copy typescript collection of 140 pages of letters from Brevet Brig. Gen. Edward Whitaker to his sister Adeline between April 28, 1961 and Feb 6, 1865.The content is a ready-to-be-publioshed book about the Civil war.Letters describe battle scenese in which he participated, bamp life and how the Union Army operates. Whitaker enlised as a Private in the 1st Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers and eventually rose to Brevet Brig. gen.He was awarded the Medal of Honor and commended by General Sheridan and Grant for his work in winning battles at Waynesboro and Five Points at the Appomattox. He is best known for delivering the message behind the Confederate lines which halted the prepared Union charge and resulted in the unconditional surrender of Confederate forces and the saving of many lives on both sides.The letters were compiled by his nephew, Willard James, in 1919. No, I do not know what happened to the original letters. the collection ends with a brief mounted obit from the New York times reporting Whitakers death on July 30, 1933 at age 81.
