In 1853 Congress had voted and directed Secretary Of War Jefferson Davis to authorize an exploration of a Central Route to the Pacific for a Transcontinental Railroad, Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale was selected to head the expedition, Beale had selected his cousin, Gwinn Harris Heap to serve as journalist for the expedition, and recorded an exploration classic. With information on the plants, animals, mountains, Indians, Mormons, Kit Carson, John Charles Fremont, etc. With a large fold out map in rear of the Central Route from the Valley of the Mississippi to California, and illustrations drawn by Gwinn Harris Heap. This is the first printing after the rare first edition of 1854, and this edition is quite scarce.
