Riassunto: This book would have done justice to a professional historian of science when it was first published in 1903. Its author was a Jesuit Church historian, but one fully alive to the needs of Catholics and Christians in his day, the closing decades of the nineteenth century. He regaled them with a splendid "contribution to the history of culture in the 19th century," to quote the subtitle of the book. Those decades were reverberating with the claim that science had discredited the Christian Creed and that scientists, by and large, had abandoned religious convictions as the final obstacles to a human culture steeped in science. As befitted a conscientious and accomplished historian, Father Kneller tracked down the record which fully disclosed the falsity of that claim. Even after almost 100 years, his book bursts with information, not easily available elsewhere and certainly not in a similarly impressive synthesis. The book is a paramount proof that, during the nineteenth century, believing scientists of stature far outnumbered their counterparts with materialistic convictions.

A contribution to the history of culture is an important part of the title of this painstakingly researched study, written in 1903 by a Jesuit priest. The cultural trend in late nineteenth-century Europe was one of contempt for religion, and the Catholic Church in particular was seen as ''the epitome of obscurantism. It was in those years that the word 'Kohlerglaube' (stupidly blind faith) became a label regularly applied, in certain circles, to Catholic convictions'' (from the introduction). Kneller's research revealed that, to the contrary, the rapidly developing modern sciences that the Kulturkampf so hailed as the fulfillment of Enlightenment dreams of the end of religion, had many believing scientists in their midst, many among their founders. This study should put an end to the notion that materialism and science are necessary partners. Codice libro della libreria 20080717144494
