Riassunto: Algernon Duigan is happily making a very rewarding if not entirely honest living as a stockbroker in London in 1967 when a blackmail attempt sees him exiled by MI6 to Saigon and being forced to engage in a clandestine opium trading operation. His cover is provided via employment in the ultimate of oxymorons: the Australian intelligence service. Far from impressed at this change of circumstance he is determined to profit from the situation by fair means or foul. Saigon is a city full of hidden agendas, where friend and foe are not easily identified. The Corsican mafia, CIA, US naval intelligence, South Vietnamese generals and local criminals are all involved in his grandiose plans of deception. His attempts to enrich himself are halted by an unforeseen tragedy of which he may be the cause. As events threaten to spin out of control he is confronted with the worst of torments: the requirement to act selflessly for the greater good. Duigan has to utilise his full range of duplicity to overcome misconceptions of arrogance, misogyny and avarice in order to convince others that he is for once trying to do the honourable thing.
