Descrizione libro Grayswood Press, Grayswood, Surrey, 2005. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. First Thus. With this third and last volume of the Collected Works of George Gissing on Charles Dickens we come to Gissing's abridgement of Forster's Life of Dickens, When published in 1902 the book caused some controversy as a few reviewers accused Gissing of tampering with a wellloved text and trying to enhance his reputation by association with the name of Forster. However, the more perceptive reviewers realised the difficulties of his task and acknowledged that he had completed an intelligent and sensitive abridgement. Gissing wrote in his preface that the length of Forster's Life intimidated the casual reader and that his task was to enable the book to reach a far wider potential audience. This he achieved with his abridgement. The last publication of the book was in the 1920s. The text has been completely reset for this edition which includes corrections found in Gissing's presentation copy to his mother. With detailed Introduction, Afterword, Notes and Appendices, Volume 3 will enhance the reader's knowledge not only of Dickens but of Gissing, Forster and the interesting background to the abridgement of Forster's Life. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Codice libro della libreria 5070

Descrizione libro Grayswood Press, Grayswood, Surrey, 2004. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. First Thus. The Collected Works of George Gissing on Charles Dickens represents the first complete compilation of Gissing's works and miscellaneous writings on Dickens. These have been divided for ease of reference onto three volumes with Volume 1 containing the Essays, Introductions and Reviews; Volume 2, Charles Dickens: A Critical Study and Volume 3, An abridgement of Forster's Life of Dickens. In addition the detailed introductions to each volume contain numerous extracts from Gissing's letters and notebooks referring to his thoughts and writings on Dickens. Thus, apart for the introduction to the Christmas Books, which the publisher of the Rochester Edition lost in the early twentieth century, these three volumes contain all the known, extant works of Gissing on Dickens. For too long, Gissing's writings on Dickens have been unfairly overshadowed by those of GK Chesterton, despite the fact that Chesterton described him as "the soundest of the Dickens critics, a man of genius." They are now due a fresh reassessment. George Gissing's own reputation has risen dramatically over the last decades and he is now viewed as a major literary figure. It seems only fitting one hundred years after his death to publish his complete writings on his illustrious predecessor, whose reputation he himself helped to revive. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Descrizione libro Grayswood Press, Grayswood, Surrey, 2004. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. First Thus. With Volume Two of the Collected Works of George Gissing on Charles Dickens we come to one of the most acclaimed titles of Gissing's literary heritage. Charles Dickens: A Critical Study was written in Siena, Italy in 1897 and first published by Blackie in the Victorian Era Series in February 1898. Any doubts that readers and critics harboured over the choice of Gissing as author were swept aside on the book's publication. It was hailed as a triumphant feat of original and incisive criticism allied to level-headed conclusions. Literature, the forerunner of the Times Literary Supplement, described the book as "the best study of Dickens we have ever read." The book became an instant classic with many reprints over the succeeding decades. This new edition entirely resets the text and corrects the many mistakes that were incorporated in the first and subsequent editions. It also includes amendments marked in Gissing's own copy of the first, 1898 edition. Thus, together with the comprehensive Introduction, Afterword and Notes and with the selected appendices, this volume presents the reader with the most accurate up-to-date text and detailed commentary on Gissing's classic work. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Codice libro della libreria 30760
