Riassunto: One of my goals in presenting Dad's writings and pictures is to illustrate that, while the focus of his writing was on hunting, providing meat for the table was only one of the activities necessary for the survival of those normal, hardy and hard-working folks living in a remote area who carved farms out of the rugged, brushy hills and valleys of the Siuslaw; who had to take care of their own needs, and occasionally help out other families in times of need. What impresses me, as much as anything, is the sheer stamina required to travel for miles on end, up and down steep hillsides, through the dense underbrush of the coastal forests, often in the rain, frequently all night after a long day of farm chores; then the long pack home with the meat (if one should be so lucky), followed by the 5:00 A.M. milking. These stories are true. This is not an "as told to" book; Dad filled thirteen narrow-lined spiral notebooks with his cramped writing. Although most of the events happened in the early 1900s in Lane County (Siuslaw National Forest) on the Central Oregon Coast, the majority of his writing was done during a long, cold Alaskan winter (1967-68). He added a few more recollections in the 1980s and 1990s while fighting a losing battle with cancer, and expressed a desire to have his stories printed in book form for family and friends. Having never so much as turned on a computer, and living in a remote area in the High Desert of Central Oregon with no electricity, I spent two weeks with a daughter and her husband (Pamela and Bruce LaPlante) who graciously and patiently coached me in the use of the computer as I worked sixteen and seventeen hour days to translate Dad's "rooster scratching" into readable form. With the use of a self-service copy shop and the generosity of the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum in Florence, Oregon, allowing me to use their binding and laminating equipment, I produced (with my daughter Julie Barlow's help on some of it) 110 copies of the 200-plus page book. Since then I have received numerous requests from family, friends, and strangers for copies of the book. Hunting was not considered a "sport," but rather an essential ingredient of life along with milking the cows and related chores; feeding the chickens; growing and harvesting a garden; cutting, hauling and storing a winter's supply of hay for the cattle; and nurturing the family. A strict, self-enforced code of ethics was employed: Take only what you need, and don't waste any. Son of a pioneer homestead family in a remote area of the Oregon coast, Dad hunted year-round to help feed the family, as did 90% of the male population. At the same time he observed profound respect for the land and its inhabitants, harvesting only what was needed and never wasting any. From a very young age, over the years and under the expert tutelage of his much older brother Ralph, he developed an enviable talent as a woodsman and hunter. With his mild demeanor and gentle ways, he enjoyed and appreciated the natural beauty surrounding him. I have added many more photographs than were in the original edition, and additional information to enhance the overall character of the book.
