Riassunto: Courageous Footsteps is a Young Adult historical novel about two teenagers, Yasu and Haro Sakamoto, who, along with their family, are imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp during WWII. Surrounded by barbwire fences, Yasu and her brother struggle to make sense out of their young lives. They long to return to the life they enjoyed in Glenville, California, but instead are forced to endure hardships and make choices that will change their lives forever.

Dall'autore: This historical novel was inspired by a Japanese American family that lived across the street from me when I was a child. Both the parents had been imprisoned in internment camps during WWII. Courageous Footsteps, is not about their family specifically. The story reveals the hardships and devastation that over one-hundred-thousand Japanese people--many of which were U.S. citizens--endured in internment camps during WWII.  Courageous Footsteps is a work of fiction grounded in historical research and the culture of the 1940s. During my three years of writing and researching this book, I gained a deeper understanding of the sacrifices these Japanese families were forced to make. Like the two memoirs I've written, this Young Adult novel reveals the joys and sorrows people experience in life. My hope is that this book will open reader's eyes to the difficulties and tragedies the Japanese families endured and how they held onto hope. This story is both timely and timeless in terms of how we see and treat others in our lives in the past, present and in the future.

Within weeks her family is imprisoned in a camp in eastern California. Surrounded by barbwire fences and the constant watch of armed guards, Yasu and her older brother, Haro, struggle to accept the overcrowded living conditions and hardships of camp life.
