Riassunto: Fifteen-year-old Yasu Sakamoto's young life turns into a devastating nightmare when Japan attacks Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Within hours, anti-Japanese threats surround her. The hateful signs in store windows, painted across buildings and in her school hallways threaten her daily life. Weeks later, under the constant watch of armed guards, her family is forced to leave their home. With only what they can carry they, along with thousands of other Japanese Americans, are imprisoned in a camp in eastern California. Behind barbwire fences, Yasu and her older brother Haro struggle to accept the overcrowded living conditions, strict camp regulations and the daily hardships imposed on them. As time passes, the constant confinement, strict camp regulations and humiliation force them into courageous choices that will change their lives forever.

From the Author: PACIFIC RIM BOOK FESTIVAL WINNER!
Courageous Footsteps is a historical novel about two teenagers, Yasu and Haro Sakamoto, who, along with their family, are imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp in eastern California during WWII. Surrounded by barbwire fences, Yasu and her brother struggle to make sense out of their young lives. They long for the life they enjoyed in Glenville, California, but instead are forced to endure hardships and make choices that will change their lives forever. An engaging and informative read for middle school and high school history classes. Awarded runner-up in the Great Midwest Book Festival in the young adult category, this piece of America's history is an informative, eye-opening read for adults too. The book was inspired by a Japanese-American family that lived across the street from me when I was a child. Both parents had been imprisoned in internment camps during WWII. Courageous Footsteps, is not about their family specifically. The story reveals the hardships and devastation over one-hundred-thousand Japanese people--many of which were U.S. citizens--endured in internment camps during WWII. Courageous Footsteps is a work of fiction grounded in historical research and the culture of the 1940s. During my three years of writing and researching this book, I gained a deeper understanding of the sacrifices these Japanese families were forced to make. Like the two memoirs I've written, this Young Adult novel reveals the joys and sorrows people experience in life. My hope is that Courageous Footsteps will open readers' eyes to the difficulties and tragedies the Japanese families endured and the determination it took to rebuild their lives. This story is both timely and timeless in terms of how we see and treat others in our lives, in the past, present and in the future. The sequel, Yasu's Quest: A Tale of Triumph, continues Yasu's journey into post-WWII.
