Riassunto: In 1877, after the defeat of Custer at Little Bighorn, the U.S. Government removed the Northern Cheyenne from their traditional homelands to a reservation in Indian Territory(Oklahoma.) This is the story surrounding the breakout of the Northern Cheyenne from Darlington Reservation in 1878 and their bloody but futile attempt to return to their homeland in Montana.

Dall'editore: In Cheyenne Autumn, Mari Sandoz gives a romanticized version of the story of the Northern Cheyenne's flight. It's time for a more accurate account.

Vernon Maddux gives a fair and balanced account of the gripping history. His version includes both the terror of white settlers as the Cheyenne murdered and pillaged their way through Kansas and the tragic end of the Cheyennes' escape as they were slaughtered by the cavalry in Nebraska.

The story has only recently ended. In 2002, the government found in some archives a bone fragment that had come from Black Horse, one of the Cheyenne warriers, when army doctors operated on his shattered ankle. In 2002, to complete at least part of the circle of life, the bone was presented to his great grandson, Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a U.S. enator from Colorado.

This work is a fascinating story in its own right. It reads like a novel, but provides a significant contribution to the history of the American West.
