Riassunto: Featuring an extra-sturdy library binding!
Here is an original and stunning new guide to the international sport of soccer. Full-color photographs of players in action, soccer uniforms, equipment and memorabilia present a unique picture of the game and the people who play it. See Zinedine Zidane lift the 1998 World Cup, how a soccer field is made, legendary players in action, and the offside trap being sprung. Learn how to take a penalty kick, which is the largest soccer stadium in the world, where Ronaldo, the great Brazilian star, learned to dribble a ball, and how the World Cup trophy was stolen. Discover who scored the first World Cup hat trick, when a ball is in or out of play, when a throw-in is illegal, what a sweeper does, how soccer players stay in shape, and much, much more.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-7-From its origins to the latest World Cup finals, Hornby covers the history of the sport. Brief discussions of such topics as shoes, uniforms, equipment, and the evolution of the rules are also included. Like other "Eyewitness" titles, the pages are jam-packed with trivia illustrated by numerous full-color photographs of players and memorabilia that will please fans. However, despite a picture of Mia Hamm on the cover, only men are discussed in the sections on famous teams and players and a mere five paragraphs in the entire book reference women. While Gary Lineker's Soccer (2000) or The Young Soccer Player (1994, both DK) focus on the skills and basic rules, Hornby vividly captures the legacy of the sport. His book may not be used as frequently as those describing soccer skills and drills, but it will find a place for those wanting to trace the history of the sport.
