Dal risvolto interno: Jan Carlson moves to Tucson from Seattle, Washington, to start his life over after divorcing his wife. After settling down in Tucson, he responds to a “Singles” advertisement in the local newspaper. He meets Alison Mantana (Ali). As their relationship develops he notices things about her which make him uncomfortable; things that Ali herself seems unaware of. Through a series of incidents, he discovers that Ali has two other personalities, Carla, an adult woman who is domineering and sexually uninhibited, and Betsy who is helpless to cope with the adversities in Ali’s life. Ali’s childhood is explored to discover the causes of her condition. In the present Ali is undergoing therapy in a clinic in Tucson, while her estranged husband tries to prevent a relationship between her and Jan. In the clinic Ali is safe from his harassment—but not Jan. When physical threats and blackmail fail, Ali’s husband hires someone to kidnap Jan and leave him in the desert to die. Later, Jan’s deepening feelings for Ali are tested to the breaking point when she confesses to the unthinkable, the commission of a murder. It seems that time for finding the real Ali might be running out.
