About the Author: Julia Segar studied social anthropology at the University of Cape Town and is a lecturer in the Anthropology Dept. of Rhodes University. In addition to rural research in Transkei, she has worked as part of a research team investigating conditions of life in Cape Town's migrant labour hostels. Her present interest is in the rapidly growing field of medical anthropology in South Africa.
