Riassunto: The spirit of a nation is clearly expressed in its holidays. Here history unites with legend and collective imagination in a way that mutually reinforces each other and sheds light over the nature of the American Dream.
Who was Saint Tammany? Why was he celebrated at May Day in almost Celtic fashion? What can we learn from the froquois legend of the foundation of their League of Five Nations? W1io were Hiawatha and the Peacemaker? What spiritual tasks did Eranldin and Washington accomplish? Who was Pocahontas and why did she become a legend? These questions are used as gateways for understanding our major holidays - Presidents' Day, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving - and what they offer to the vision of a compassionate America.
The book offers an overview of the spiritual striving that accompanied the life of the Northern American continent for millennia. This spiritual path was promoted by the Native Americans, through the Algonquian ideals of Tammany and the Iroquois strivings of Hiawatha and the Peacemaker. Little known to history are the influxes of the ancient Celts, an emblematic Templar expedition to the eastern shore, and the idealistic striving of the Freemasons that added significant influences to the local tradition.
Wind your way through the many stories and legends that are woven into the historical fabric and the collective imagination of the nation. History joins forces with myth and legend to lend strength to the little understood American Dream that lies hidden from view. A compassionate America is still possible.
L'autore: Luigi Morelli was born in Washington D. C. on May 1st 1958, and lived in Europe, South America and Africa. Since 1985 he has been a resident of Santa Cruz, California. After graduating with an Environmental Sciences graduate degree from the Free University of Brussels in 1981, he first worked in a community with developmentally disabled adults doing farming and gardening work. Later he became the owner and partner of Terra Nova Ecological Landscaping, company still in existence. For the last eight years he has been working as an employment-training specialist and in residential facilities with developmentally disabled adults.
The interest in American culture derived from life circumstances and from a passion for the understanding of cultures, fruit of his mixed heritage of European and South American backgrounds. The knowledge of different languages and exposure to cultures fostered an interest in history, anthropology and national cultures. In addition, twenty years of an active spiritual life have led him to explore Rudolf Steiner's spiritual science, Jung's psychology, and myths and legends through an intermingling of phenomenological and imaginative approaches. These are the tools that help him approach American culture and spirituality. Additionally, extensive travelling across the nation has taken him to most of the historical places mentioned in the book.
He is planning further writings based upon the Popol Vuh, Aztec and Inca myths. Like this first book, they will be based on scholarly, historic and archaeological research and the insights gained into Native American spirituality. The myths will be used as final confirmation of history through the collective memory of the Native Americans themselves. The present work and the projected ones explore the idea that the historical level of reality does not negate the mythological level. To unravel this seeming contradiction it is necessary to penetrate the language of the images present in legends and myth. Images then become windows to new worlds of meaning. When that happens, history and legend do not stand at odds, but on the contrary, mutually reinforce each other.
