Descrizione:

Early and considered the first history of Canada as such. Two volumes in recent clam-shell box. Volume I has the William Smith family bookplate affixed to the front paste-down endpaper, and this set in all likelihood was the author's own, his father and uncle of the same name having passed prior to its publication. [Note: this bookplate matches the Heraldic Bearings which appear on the bookplate of {Chief Justice} William Smith (1728 - 1793) affixed to one of the original volumes of his "Historical Memoirs of the Province of New York" currently in the Manuscript Division of the New York Public Library ans are known to be used by other members of the family]. William Smith (III) Esqr., the author of the present work, was son of Chief Justice Smith, and was himself Clerk of the Parliament and Master in Chancery of the Province of Lower Canada. First Edition. Original plain paper-covered boards. Lacks front board of volume II. Some moderate wear and chipping to edges, spine somewhat brittle with small chips. Edges toned, occasional foxing and faint discoloration. Front hinge brittle but cords holding. Otherwise internally very good to near fine: a clean, tight and unmarked set. Very neat -- an attractive set. Errata leaf in volume I, folding table in volume II. Volume I has armorial bookplate of William Smith Esqr. inside front board. (V.I)vi+iii[+i]383+72[appendix];(V.II)ii,235p. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Codice inventario libreria 39074br
