(publisher?)), XVI-XXVI (author's Preface), 1-293 pp., both covers missing, fine leather spine with five raised bands, bright gilt title and author name against red field in top compartment; Lond. and year in bottom compartment, gilt floral design in other compartments, all very bright, very slight loss (rubbing) to top, bottom spine; pages with top edge gilt clean and unmarked, but 1" corner torn off Plate 6 of Rake's Progress outside image, yellow cloth bookmark still attached, occasional light foxing, shadows on pages facing prints, tight and secure text block. With 60 plates (all present), most on separate card stock, generally very bright though a few with foxing, along with in-text illustrations, frontis tissue-protected portrait of Hogarth. pp. 271-274, 275-278 preceding Descriptive List (With Variations of the Original Prints) at end and final 20 pages uncut (unseparated). With notes of particular interest scattered throughout - e.g., the portraits in a Rake's Progress, I, include Figg, a prize fighter, Dubois, a fencing master, and Handel; the speaker in The Public Lecture is a Mr. Fisher of Jesus College, Oxford, Registrar of University; the hero of the print, The Enraged Musician, was one John Festin, a teacher of music, who related to Hogarth having once been enraged at observing a musician playing upon a hautboy in exchange for onions, thus ridiculing his profession; in his commentary on the print, Night, mentions that places of shelter for the "houseless poor" have been provided in the past 10-15 years in London by a Mr. Hicks; in defense of England, accused among the people of France of a passion for animal combats, provides a translation of a French poster inviting to amusements of bull and bear-baiting, boar-hunting & co. Spine has five raised bands, with 5 panels of fleurons and one with title "Hogarth's Works". Text block edges gilt. 293 pp., with many black and white engraved plates. Good+, Hinges at top cracked, covers attached soundly, however. Former owner's bookplate, with coat of arms, pasted behind ffep.
