Riassunto: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 188? edition. Excerpt: ... Thou unrelenting past! Strong are the barriers round thy dark domain, And fetters sure and fast, Hold all that enter thy unbreathing reign. W. C. Bryant. KILWINNING is nothing if it is not ecclesiastical. It is true that Archers and Free Masons look to our district as one in which the twang of the bow and the tune of the "Merry Masons" have resounded for centuries, and that, too, with a frequency and a force seldom experienced elsewhere. But our fame rests on our ecclesiastical connection. Indeed, we live and move among names, and places, and stories which remind us of nothing so much as the fact that we are what we are, because "in ages dim," and in ages not dim, our parish has been associated with matters religious. Outside of our town we have the estates of Monkcastle and Monkredden, and a Druid's Grove--" Our three-hilled altar by Old Garnock's side,"--and the Well of St. Winning. Within the town we have the streets and lanes of Alms Wall and Abbey Gate, the Byres and the Green, Dove Cot Lane, the Cross Brae, and the G.orsehill; and we have strange stones peering out on one or two of our oldest buildings, as if almost ashamed of their old world faces, yet determined to speak to us of the distant past; and in the walls that surround the town and the gables of our houses there are the strongest indications of our ancestors having made themselves comfortable at the expense of the magnificent Abbey, whose ruins still attest its former greatness; and the folk-lore, the fire-side stories of Kilwinning, concern Monasteries and Monks, and Steeples and Bells, and St. Winning's Fairs. We are constantly, then, brought into contact with ecclesiastical affairs, and perhaps it will not be disagreeable to hear a little of our ecclesiastical...
