The old King had recently died, leaving the Fairy Godmother in charge of helping the people find their new King.
Now, this kingdom was known far and wide for producing incredibly fine woolen cloth that sold for excellent prices on the Fairytale Market. The new King would be, therefore, in charge of an industrious and profitable kingdom, so it would be very important to select the right person who could lead the kingdom to even greater prosperity.
The Fairy Godmother called a town meeting to discuss with the people how the new King should be selected.
"Well," said the Fairy Godmother, "How will you select your King?"
"Easy," said the people, "We will choose from a group of qualified candidates a King who will take our kingdom to the next level of organizational health and financial prosperity!"
And so the decree went out to the four corners of the kingdom that all suitably qualified applicants should report immediately to the town hall for royal consideration.
The very first person to arrive at the town hall was the Crown Prince himself. The only child of the former King, the Crown Price was a popular and well-known figurehead, but he notoriously preferred hunting parties and bar maids to a hard day's work.
"My fellow subjects and admirers," the Prince began, "as my father was King, so should I be. This position is mine by birthright alone."
A murmur arose from the people. "Well, he is the Crown Prince... His father was a wonderful King, so he should be one too!"
"As you wish," said the Fairy Godmother.
And so the Crown Prince became the King.
Before long, the people came begging the Fairy Godmother for a different new King.
"Please," they pleaded, "Our beautiful fields are torn apart from the King's hunting parties, the treasury is nearly bankrupt from his wild spending, and even our grandmothers do not feel safe at night! We need a King with more than just a famous last name!"
"A wise decision," said the Fairy Godmother, "A leader must be committed to pleasing his people, not just himself. He must understand he is but a part of the whole picture, not merely a self-portrait! So, who is your next candidate?"
An elderly statesman slowly hobbled forward. "I am the oldest person in the entire kingdom," the Elder proclaimed a bit too loudly, "I have more experience than all of you, so I am truly the best suited to be King."
"Yes, yes," the people cried." The Elder deserves to be King - he has certainly paid his dues and can claim seniority over any of us!"
"As you wish," sighed the Fairy Godmother.
And so the Elder became the King.
Again, it was not long before the people sought out the Fairy Godmother and begged for a new King.
"Please," they pleaded, "We are worse off than before! All he does is talk too loudly about `the old days' and `the way things used to be.' He will not listen to us or consider anything new -especially technologies and ideas! We need a King who is forward-thinking and who understands the business of being a King!
"Another wise decision," said the Fairy Godmother, "A leader must be a good communicator, a great listener, and able to embrace the right technologies and ideas to create a sustainable and profitable future. Who is your next candidate?"
This time, a Royal Treasurer from a neighboring kingdom bowed arrogantly to the crowd.
"In my extensive experience, I understand the importance of a strong financial balance sheet. I have already led several other kingdoms to significant profitability, and if made King, I will quickly bring this kingdom back into the black - for a small fee, of course."
The people greedily licked their lips. "He will make us rich again!" they cheered.
"As you wish," the Fairy Godmother sighed, shaking her head.
And so the Royal Treasurer became the King.
Once more, it was not long before the people sought out the Fairy Godmother.
"Please!" they begged, "He has gotten rid of our children because they were not providing enough value to the kingdom, while the rest of us are starving and freezing from the severely rationed supplies! He only cares about the bottom line - not our welfare!"
"Yes," said the Fairy Godmother, "A leader should genuinely care about the people he is leading. You should not have to fight each other for scarce resources or rewards, and the focus should be on long-term goals, not short-term profits."
She looked around the room, "Is there anyone left? Anyone at all who should be made King?"
This time, no one stepped forward.
"What will we do?" the people cried, "What will happen to us?"
