From the Preface: At first sight the task of writing a lexicon of the Hebrew (and Aramaic) of the Old Testament may appear to be an easy one. Yet there are a number of points and difficulties which call for a word of explanation. The first thing that has to be done is the arrangement of all the words in alphabetical order. This is, however, not a simple matter, because a large number of words begin with a prefix. The excellent Hebrew and English Lexicon of Brown, Driver and Briggs arranges these words under their appropriate stem, the so called root. It is not always easy, however, for beginners and the inexpert to find them there. Moreover, the derivation of a word is not always certain. The order of words adopted in the present lexicon is, therefore, strictly alphabetical. In addition, derivative forms are given with each stem (root).
