Riassunto: A collection of eighteen retold tales and legends from all over the world, including "The Graveyard Rose" and "The Ten Years' Child."
From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up Harris has chosen traditional folk material to represent cultures from 18 countries and restructures it as human mini-dramas in sophisticated, literary retellings. The collection's range is reflected in its titlefrom an Indian Buddhist tale of the prince who lost his body to a false friend to the last, a good retelling of a French Grail legend. With the tales fleshed out with realistic detail and cultural allusions, their magic is seen with new intensity. Thus in "The Small Red Ox" from Iceland (although told elsewhere as "Kari Woodencoat," "Jack and the Bull," etc.), Harris makes real the horror Einar feels at being spied on by that one stepsister whose forehead skin-flap reveals a third eye. Le Cain's glowing surreal and symbolic paintings for seven of the tales complement the interpretations and reflect in style the country represented (India, China, West Africa, Egypt, Greece, Germany, France). Those who enjoyed Dinesen's Seven Gothic Tales (Random, 1972; o.p.) or young teens who liked McKinley's Beauty (Harper, 1978) or Farjeon's retellings are likely readers for this title. Ruth M.
