Riassunto: Louis XVIII, is often considered a nonentity whose weaknesses, apathy, greed, insensitivity, were flagrant, and whose virtues, prudence, imperturbability, moderation, were unspectacular. Mansel sets out to prove he deserves better. The author considers the King's exile and move from Germany to Italy, from Italy to Russia and finally England, as well as examining Louis XVIII's ten year reign on the throne of France.

L'autore: Philip Mansel is a historian of courts and dynasties. His books include a study of the Court of France, a history of Constantinople, Paris between Empires, and a life of the Prince de Ligne. He has written for numerous publications, including the Financial Times, the International Herald Tribune, the TLS and the Spectator. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Institute of Historical Research and editor of The Court Historian. His web-site can be consulted at
