Riassunto: The war, they said, would be over by Christmas. That was in 1939, and it is now January 1944. An exhausted England faces another year of conflict. Meanwhile, small coastal villages in Devon are facing an invasion from an army just as foreign as that of the Germans?. The Americans are smart, well-fed and well-equipped, and they have swept the bewildered citizens of South Devon from their homes in deadly earnest rehearsal for D-Day.
As the beaches echo to the sound of bullets, Americans and English are thrown together with sometimes hilarious, sometimes painful and puzzling results.
Dall'audiolibro: This English novel, not yet published in America, depicts a little-known chapter in World War II when American troops took over a part of South Devon to train for the Normandy invasion. Multiple storylines make for an engrossing presentation, creating a compassionate picture of wartime training and romance, English resentment of rich Americans, and the politics of multinational armies. Peter Whitman's strength is his thoughtful delivery and his appropriate and consistent portrayal of male characters. While he's generally well-tuned to his text, his superficial and inconsistent interpretation of female characters detracts from an otherwise competent production. S.K. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
