Riassunto: Examines Magic Johnson's career as a record-breaking champion with the L.A. Lakers and discusses his fight against AIDS.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-- These four biographies feature contemporary athletes who are among the most recognizable in their particular sport. Each contains a brief but accurate account of the subject's life, presenting the sports star in a positive but not overly glamorized manner. Both black-and-white and full-color photographs abound, including shots from the athletes' preprofessional days. Johnson discusses the fact that he's HIV positive while not attempting to explain the condition. Greenberg's Magic Johnson (Lerner, 1992) covers the AIDS issue in more detail. All four books end after the 1991 sports seasons, thus Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins' and Jordan and the Chicago Bulls' successful championship defenses, along with Johnson's Olympic performance, are not chronicled. This series will successfully serve those libraries in need of sports biographies aimed at this audience. --Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
