Riassunto: My Mother's Kitchen is an enchanting place filled with promise, change and good food. If the weathered walls of this magical room could talk they would tell the story of Meena and her childhood life. Each chapter is a slice in her young life and depicts her spunk and youthful spirit. A visit to the local Fruit and Flower Show becomes an adventure as told by Meena. Her distress at finding out about her aunt's dark secret or her joy of making a new friend are all told in her naïve, yet pure voice. Her mother is a central character in her life and it is no wonder that the kitchen is a special place of healing and rejuvenation, not only for Meena but for other characters like Kashi and Ayah.
Dall'autore: The book was written as a tribute to my mother who passed away in 2004. In 2008 I joined a writing group in Davis, CA and the group decided to publish a literary magazine featuring members' writings. I decided to submit a piece about growing up in my mother's kitchen and it seemed natural to add a recipe at the end of the article because I had such loving memories of cooking with my mom in her kitchen. When the magazine came out, we had a reading at a local art gallery and many audience members came by and asked when the book would be published. I had not thought of writing a book because the piece was supposed to be a stand-alone piece. So I went back and changed the memoir format to a fiction and changed the name of the narrator from "Meera" to "Meena." I added about 26 more chapters and 25 recipes to the book about a young girl growing up in south India. The book was completed in 2009 but it took until 2013 to get it published. There were no vampires, zombies or Fifty Shades of Gray and it was hard to get agents interested in a simple book about growing up. Finally in April of 2013 a small indie press, Homebound Publications, picked up the book and it took a year for it to be published. So October 14, 2014 was the birthdate of my newest baby, "My Mother's Kitchen: A novel with recipes." I hope you enjoy the story, vivid descriptions and tasty recipes. The stories are loosely based on my life but the book and characters are fiction. I enjoy hearing from my readers. Please visit my author page for contact information.
