"I compiled these stories and reminiscences over a period of years before my mother, Luck Marincel, died in the spring in 1897. I wrote them as close as possible to the way Mothertold tem, just as they came to her mind. One memory seemed to recall another, though perhaps on another subject. I have written them down in no special order, though i have frouped the tales according to subjects: people, places, times, events. I have tried to write the words as Mother spoke them so as to reproduce as much as possible her characteristic voice. I have found that her words were not always the same as those in the Croatian-English dictionary, and in some cases I was not able to locate the word at all. Most likely the words are different because of the local dialect. When we visited Zagreb in 1972, a resident there {a stranger} told us he could tell we spoke like the 'Licani' [people from Lika} from some of the words we used and the way we pronounced them."
