Riassunto: This book begins by referencing ancient texts that link the Irish townland of Aughnaloopy to the estate of Nicholas Bagenal. Through family histories, it follows the population through the turmoil of the late 18th Century, the campaign for Catholic Emancipation, the growth of the linen industry, right through to the present day. Historical documents such as the Bagenal Mourne Rentals of 1715, the Flax Growers List of 1796, the Griffith’s Valuation, the 1901 and 1911 census and the Ulster Covenant and corresponding Declaration are all analyzed in detail. As in every townland across Ireland, many Aughnaloopy residents left their homeland in search of work and adventure overseas. For some their departure was temporary, but others settled permanently and there are many across the globe that can trace their ancestry back to the little townland of Aughnaloopy. Several local residents and descendants of Aughnaloopy families, now living in the US, Canada, New Zealand and England, have contributed to this project. Family stories, photographs, poems and other ephemera are all included in this book. Although the focus of this book is on Aughnaloopy, the work will be of benefit to anyone pursuing a one-name or one-location genealogy study. Families featured in the book include: Allen, Annett, Beck, Bradley, Campbell, Carvill, Donnelly, Doran, Fitzpatrick, Flannigan, Hagan, Hanna, Johnson, Keown, McAvoy, McParlin, McVeagh, Mills, Moore, Morgan, Murphy, Quinn, Rogers, Skillen, Small, Spiers, Traynor, Wachop, Wilson and Wright. Locations featured in the book include: Liverpool (UK), Hohokus (NJ), San Francisco (CA), Butte (MT), Albany (NY), South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

About the Author: This book was a collaborative effort between author FIONA DOYLE JONES and genealogical researcher SHEILA PHILLIPS. Fiona Doyle Jones, who resides in New Jersey, USA, and genealogist Sheila Phillips from Ballymartin, Co. Down first made contact in 2006 via the Internet and quickly discovered they shared an interest in researching the Doyle family of Kilkeel. It wasn’t long before Fiona asked Sheila if she knew anything about James Doyle’s wife Ann Quinn who was born c.1840. Quinn is a common name throughout the Kilkeel area and it was difficult to know where to begin to learn more about Ann. After a couple of trips to the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), Sheila discovered that Fiona’s Great-Grandmother Ann Quinn was in fact the daughter of James 'Hamilton' Quinn from Aughnaloopy. Further research revealed more ties between the researchers, including that their paternal grandmothers had been neighbours on Newcastle Street in Kilkeel town for over fifty years. As a result of weekly trips to PRONI over the next five years and a scouring of all available online resources, a detailed picture of the Quinn family emerged, including information that Ann had several brothers who had settled in New Zealand. Fiona and Sheila discovered that the lives of the families of this small townland were so intermingled that it was impossible to understand the history of one family without understanding the personal and business interactions that they had with their neighbours and so their investigation expanded to include all residents of Aughnaloopy. This book is the result of that research. Sheila passed away on January 12, 2012 while working on the Moore family chapter of this book. It was her wish that the work was published with the reminder to all that family research is never complete and that we have an obligation to share our knowledge with others.
