Riassunto:

Mrs. Malarky, the babysitter, describes her seven cats, how she acquired them, and how they all left her for their own reasons.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A warm, cozy story that introduces readers to the Malarky family's cat collection. A preschool-sized boy asks his babysitter, Mrs. Malarky, to tell him about her seven cats and then draws and imagines them before the sitter comes again. However, on the next visit, the woman tells him how all but one found a new place to live, wandered off in the springtime, or were reclaimed by former owners. It "must be sad and quiet" in Mr. and Mrs. Malarky's house now, thinks the boy, but the babysitter has a surprise--a photo of the one remaining cat with her six kittens. Black line drawings lightly filled in with watercolor show these individual cats with humor and affection. Plenty of white spaces give the book the feeling of a story told at peaceful leisure--no hurry, no flurry. Contrasting endpapers neatly offset the book's interior; crammed with russet, brown, ochre, orange, and white cats, they suggest what may happen if "each of those cats had kittens." Owners of cats, stuffed or real, will find quiet satisfaction in these feline and human relationships. --Susan Hepler, Arlington Public Library, VA
