First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author / theatre director and critic Harold Clurman to the legendary Broadway actress Carol Channing: ÒTo Carol Channing with admiration & a great smile of appreciation. From Harold Clurman, March 17, Ô66.Ó Miss Channing is mentioned in the book and a glowing review of her 1964 Broadway performance in Hello Dolly! is included. Clurman writes: ÒThough ÔHello Dolly!Õ is extremely lavish in sets and costumes and is put together with exemplary skill by Gower Champion, what impresses me most in this new musical is the personality of Carol Channing. She is not an unknowing performer, but I venture to say that she is barely conscious of what gives her performance its particular appeal. Even her audience may not realize why they like her so much. Goggle-eyes shining, mouth agape glistening with a multitude of teeth, her voice crackling, Miss Channing makes us believe she finds this the best of possible worlds despite a never-declared but always evident heartbreak. She is the most credulous girl in the world.Ó Clearly smitten, Clurman raves on, holding nothing back, and we lucky readers are the better for it. Fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with a hint of fading to the spine and trace of edge wear. A collection of writings about the modern theatre, with pieces on Albee, Beckett, Giradoux, Ionesco, LeRoi Jones, John Osborne, Pinter, Tennessee Williams, and many others. At the time of this inscription Carol Channing was married to her third husband Charles Lowe. The lovely Carol Elaine Channing (born January 31, 1921) is an American singer and actress with a fine sense of comedic timing, a distinctive smile and voice, and a generous spirit. She is the recipient of three Tony Awards (including one for lifetime achievement), a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. Channing is best remembered for originating, on Broadway, the musical-comedy roles of bombshell Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and matchmaking widow Dolly Gallagher Levi in Hello, Dolly!.
