Riassunto: Nominated as the best novel by Eça de Queiroz and one of the greatest works of literature from Portugal of all time. The scenario is the city of Lisbon at the end of the nineteenth century, with its decadent bourgeoisie and a prominent cultural transition. There lives Afonso da Maia, the patriarch, and his grandson Carlos. The work is developed around the history of the Maia family - its tradition, its moral and the facts of the recent past - and the characterization of the Portuguese society of the time. Adultery, dishonor and critical draining involving the characters of the aristocracy. There are also major discussions on arts, culture, politics, in which, as in none of his other works, the ideas of Eça de Queiroz come up.
L'autore: Romanticist, novelist, columnist, and critic, Jose Maria Eça de Queiroz, baptism name of the great writer, born in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, on November 25, 1845 and died on August 16, 1890 in the city of Paris, France. Eça de Queiroz started his studies in the city of Porto, Portugal. Graduated in Law, in 1866, at the University of Coimbra. Considered by some literary critics the biggest representative of Portuguese Realism-Naturalism, Eça has become, in the eyes of João Gaspar Simoes, a ?major figure of Portuguese literature of all time, and without a doubt the writer who gave the literary language of Portugal and Brazil its fluidity, its flexibility and its up-to-dateness.?
