Riassunto: Why were the `Swing' rioters transported to Australia? Where was evidence of the earliest known example of cremation in the world found? Who were the members of the "Three Elevens?" How did the Angry Penguins acquire their name? The answers to these and thousands of other questions can be found in this revised and updated edition of a popular reference book. Now illustrated with a wide range of maps, photographs, and cartoons, the dictionary has entries on the major people, events, places, institutions, ideas, artifacts, and documents that have shaped Australian history from prehistory to the 1990s.
Recensione: Australia is more than just a enormous tract of land. There are the events, ideas, institutions, artifacts, movements, and people that make up the history of that land. Jan Bassett covers it all in this dictionary, and the pictures and illustrations are a nice addition. The portrait of Catherine Helen Spence is quite striking, for example, and rounds out the entry on Spence and her life as a writer, feminist, and social reformer. Likewise, "The Blood Vote" cartoon graphically evokes the controversy of the compulsory enlistment mandated by the Defense Act of 1909. Altogether a scholarly and worthy tome, from the Aboriginal flag to Zeehan, Tasmania, the Dictionary of Australian History provides 300 pages of impressive historical and cultural breadth and depth in an accessible and engaging format. --Stephanie Gold
