THE 1847 CHICAGO CONVENTION ON RIVERS AND HARBORS OCCURED ONLY 14 YEARS AFTER THE CITY WAS INCORPORATED WHEN CHICAGO WAS A FRONTIER COMMUNITY. THE NATIONAL CONVENTION BROUGHT HUNDREDS OF WHIG DELEGATES TO THE CITY AFTER PRESIDENT POLK VETOED AN APPROPRATIONS BILL TO IMPROVE CHICAGO'S HARBER. THE CONVENTION DELEGATES DELIBERATED ON THE BUILDING AND IMPROVEMENT OF HARBORS AND THE USE OF RIVERS FOR COMMERCIAL TRADE IN THE UNITED STATES.
