About the Author: Bernardin de Saint-Pierre est né en 1737 au Havre, et mort en 1814. Dès l’enfance, la lecture de Robinson Crusoé décide de sa destinée : il veut l’aventure, et si ses parents l’engagent dans des études d’ingénieur, il mettra à profit ses compétences pour découvrir le monde. Animé d’un esprit rebelle et chevaleresque, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre traverse fortunes et infortunes à travers toute l’Europe. En 1768, il part pour l’île de France, appelée aujourd’hui l’île Maurice, et y reste trois ans. A son retour à Paris, il fréquente les Lumières et se lie d’une profonde et mélancolique amitié avec Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Il commence alors les rédactions de textes littéraires, dont Paul et Virginie, en 1787. L’utopie qu’il décrit dans son roman rejoint les idées philosophiques de Rousseau, on y retrouve l’âge d’or de l’humanité où les hommes sans instruction étaient purs et moraux par la simple force de leur sensibilité et de la nature qui forme pour eux le modèle de l’harmonie et de l’innocence.
