From scientists to actors, politicians to journalists, business people to artists, this careful selection provides insight into the lives of remarkable individuals who excelled through hard work and persistence. They are the living proof of the "American Dream", yet they have not forgotten their Greek roots. Recensione: Steve Frangos, c. 2011 Portraits of Prominent Greeks in the USA , is unquestionably one of those volumes that comes off the press as an instant classic (Athens: Maria Gianna Editions, 2011. Sixty-three Greek Americans are profiled in this volume that matches succinct very well-written biographies with portrait photographs. Maria Yanna, the individual who conceived of this project, as well as the project s photographer, believed this volume to be necessary so that non-Greeks would learn something of the accomplishments of the Greeks living in their midst. This volume more than succeeds in this goal. But other issues are afoot as well. Yet, we should wait before examining the larger issues and consider what Yanna has so artfully engineered. The volume is very much a collective enterprise. Aside from Yanna's photographs and her orchestrating of the entire project we find John C. Bastias as author of the volume s biographies and supportive text. Bastias considerable credentials include but are not limited to his work as author, publisher and editor of the 17-volume History of the Greek Nation and the 4-volume he Treasures of Mount Athos Illustrated Manuscripts. A general historical introduction on the Greeks in the United States is provided by Professor Speros Vryonis, Jr. Yanna offers her own introductory note as a photographer. The volume s foreword is written by Senator Olympia J. Snowe with an additional introductory note offered by Pavlos Yeroulanos, Greek Minister of Culture and Tourism. Aside from this line-up of talent this hardbound book is printed in full-color on high gloss paper of some 288 pages and measures approximately 10 x 11 ½ . The Greeks profiled in this volume include those who could speak no English upon their arrival to American shores as well as those whose grandparents instilled a love of all things Greek within their descendants. Given this wide sweep I think it mandatory that I name the sixty three individuals included in this volume. Without these names the true scope of this project can be misunderstood as well as any comments I might make concerning this volume, its underlying themes, or any of the individuals found within its covers. The Greek-Americans found in this volume are: Theoni V. Aldredge, Heléne Alexopoulos, Kary Antholis, Stephen Antonakos, George L. Argyros, Andrew A. Athens, George D. Behrakis, Lily Haseotes Bentas, John Brademas, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, Plato Cacheris, John P. Calamos, Sr., John A. Catsimatidis, Chryssa, Peter H. Diamandis, Andreas Dracopoulos, Michael Dukakis, Jeffrey Eugenides, Nicholas Gage, Sid Ganis, Peter C. Georgiopoulos, James N. Gianopulos, Elias P. Gyftopoulos, George N. Hatsopoulos, Matina Horner, Melina Kanakaredes, Christine Kondoleon, Costas Kondylis, Stamatios M. Krimigis, Ted J. Leonsis, George Lois, C. Dean Metropoulos, George P. Mitchell, Dimitri V. Nanopoulos, John D. Negroponte, Michel Negroponte, Nicholas Negroponte, Alexander Nehamas, John Pappajohn, Aristides N. Patrinos, George Pelecanos, Peter G. Peterson, Harry Mark Petrakis, Barbara Spyridon Pope, John Psarouthakis, Michael Psilakis, Gene Rossides, Paul S. Sarbanes, Olympia J. Snowe, Dean Spanos, Christos Chris Spirou, George Stephanopoulos, Dean Tavoularis, Taki Theodoracopulos, William Bill Tragos, Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, Andreas G. Tzakis, Nia Vardalos, John Varvatos, Speros Vryonis, Jr., Ioannis V. Yannas, and finally Nicholas T. Zervas. To be completely frank there were quite a number of individuals included here I had never heard of and I imagine that will be the same experience for any other Reader. The persons found here include academics, actors, artists, chiefs, dancers, designers, merchants, politicians, scientists, writers and assorted others. --The National Herald Newspaper
