IN THE BEGINNING, THE TOWN'S REPUTATION AND "MORALS" WERE VERY LOW. FIFTEEN OF THE SEVENTEEN HOUSE AT THE TIME SERVED LIQUOR TO THE WORKERS ON THE CANAL. IN 1846 THE FIRST PREACHER ARRIVED TO A VERY DISINTERESTED POPULATION. IN 1847, THE MIGRATION OF PURITAN STOCK FROM VERMONT ARRIVED AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF "THE AMERICAN HOME MISSIONARY SOCIETY" AND AN ASSORTMENT OF RELIGIOUS GROUPS, THE CONCEPT OF A CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH WAS FORMED. OTHER RELIGIUOS FOLLOWIERS ARRIVED AS THE TOWN OF MORRIS GREW IN POPULATION AND THEY FOUNDED THEIR OWN CHURCHES.
