While teaching she studied photography. Since that beginning, she has had numerous photographs and articles published and has participated in overs fifty solo, group, and juried exhibitions. Among other awards, Dismukes received a grant to photograph the Exposition Park community during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. As Seen, a book of her photographs, was published in 1995. Her interest in world cultures has taken her to over forty-five countries. Dismukes' photographs reflect her continuing fascination with people that is fueled by extensive travel abroad. In appreciation of traditional artists and their work, she has filled her home with ethnic baskets, dolls, and textiles.
