Riassunto: Red Letter Year -- Munich 1950-51, is about the experiences Gene and I (both veterans of World War II) had as members of the Harvard Refugee Interview Project team of 25 graduate students in Russian language and Soviet affairs from Harvard and Columbia under the sponsorship of the US Air Force. We interviewed former Soviet citizens, Displaced Persons, DPs, to determine what life was like in the Soviet Union, i.e., what makes the Soviets tick. Fifty+ years later there has been growing interest in World War II and the immediate postwar period. Red Letter Year is a compilation of our letters home -- no computers then, just my good old Royal typewriter, five carbons. We share our enchantment with Europe, our first visit to Paris, our insights about Russian DPs and their lives, and our concerns with the remnants of Jewish life in postwar Germany, just ten miles from Dachau. There is a moving memorial to the young Air Force pilot, West Pointer, dear friend and distant cousin, who lost his life to save others. Red Letter Year is a warm, personal, unique story told from the perspective of a newlywed American Jewish couple living in postwar American occupied Germany that will touch the hearts and minds of those who remember 50 years ago and those who are curious and want to learn. Interspersed throughout the text are comments bringing RLY up to the present. Gregory Grossman, Professor Emeritus, University of California at Berkeley, writes: a telling slice of XXth century history revealed through a rich personal correspondence.; And Anatole Shub, former Moscow correspondent of the Washington Post says: evocative of the atmosphere of the Munich occupation days. I am delighted to have been working with the talented, fine sculptor and design artist, Paul Jeffries, as well as Andy Mintzer of GFI, the excellent graphic press that published my first book, A New Life Is Coming Soon, The Story of My Father, Isaac Donen.

L'autore: GLORIA DONEN SOSIN is a writer, lecturer and translator whose book A New Life Is Coming Soon, The Story of My Father, Isaac Donen (Kalita Press) was published in1992. Cynthia Ozick writes: What an illumination -- with its memories of water carried in two pails on a yoke, and its cry against assimilation -- this beautiful and touching work will one day be to your grandchild and to all our children. A New Life Is Coming Soon is the only publication to have resulted from the more than 250 entries in a contest held more than fifty years ago by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Her by-line has appeared in The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Forward, Present Tense, the New Leader, The Jewish Week and the Gannett newspapers. She and her husband have lectured jointly on aspects of Soviet life at colleges and libraries and have given several lecture series at The White Plains Library and the Neuberger Museum. A trained oral historian, Gloria Donen Sosin has personally interviewed several hundred Soviet Jewish émigrés in the United States, Europe, and Israel as well as refuseniks in the former Soviet Union, for the American Jewish Committee, Harvard University, Columbia University and the University of Illinois.
