Riassunto: A biogragphy of the controversial President whose administration was brought down by the Watergate scandal, but also reestablished diplomatic ties with China and ended the Vietnam War.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 7-10-- Randolph opens this biography of Nixon with an account of his resignation in 1974, describing how the Watergate scandal affected our country. She then chronicles his life from his early years to the present, with an emphasis on the development and outcome of his political career. There are a few glimpses into Nixon's personality, but the bulk of the book is devoted to his public life. Randolph covers all the milestones in his life, and also includes plenty of background for readers who might not be familiar with some of the events and people in the text. The real strength of this book is Randolph's objectivity. She does not portray Nixon as a blameless hero or as a villain, but as a man who had some real successes and some terrible failures. By doing this, she allows readers see some of the forces which shaped his life, describing how his ambition and the loss of the 1960 elections due to fraud changed his life and colored the way he conducted future campaigns and his presidency. She also informs readers of history's changing perceptions of Nixon and that it will be many years before an impartial judgment of his presidency can be made. Randolph writes well, and this is an interesting, informative book with many photos of Nixon at various points in his life. There are few current biographies of Nixon for younger readers and this title should be considered by libraries needing material about contemporary presidents. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
