BEAGLE AND IS ENTITLED "MAYOR DALEY: CAN THE RINGMASTER KEEP THE SHOW GOING? DALEY'S POWERFUL INFLUENCE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, IN WASHINGTON DC, IN THE POLITICS OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS AND IN THE CITY OF DHICAGO BROUGHT THE CONVENTION TO CHICAGO IN SPITE OF THE UNREST IN THE NATION, INCLUDING THE ANTI-VIETNAM WAR RIOTS, THE UNREST IN THE BLACK COMMUNITIES AND THE RIOTS IN CHICAGO IN APRIL OF 1968. THE ARTICLE STATES THAT DALEY AND RENNIE DAVIS, THE COORDINATOR FOR "THE NATIONAL MOBILIZATION COMMITTEE TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM" HAD AGREEMENTS THAT THE NATIONAL MOBILZATION COMMITTEE TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM "WOULD BRING 50,000 DEMONSTRATORS TO CHICAGO, THEY WOULD PUBLISH A DAILY CONVENTION NEWSPAPER, ORGANIZE MASS MEETINGS AND SEMINARS, AND KEEP THE COMMUNICATIONS OPEN WITH THE ADMINISTRATION AND THE POLICE. DAVIS STATES THAT "THEY'VE USED MACE AND CLUBS ON US IN THE PAST, BUT A DECISION HAS APPARENTLY BEEN MADE TO REACH AN UNDERSTANDING WITH US THIS TIME. WE'LL FOLLOW THE RULES, IF THEY GIVE US THE PERMITS. IF THEY CONTINUE TO PLAY STRAIGHT WITH US, WE WON'T BE STORMING THE AMPITHEATER." THERE IS A FULL PAGE B/W PHOTO OF RICHARD J. DALEY AND A COLOR CARICATURE OF DALEY LEANING ON A MEGAPHONE WHILE WIPING HIS FOREHEAD WITH A HANDKERCHIEF. ANOTHER ARTICLE IS BY THE AUTHOR JOAN DIDION AND IS ENTITLED "ON BECOMING A COP HATER." IN IT SHE RELATES SEVERAL EXPERIENCES WITH POLICEMEN IN INCIDENTS THAT SHE CONSIDERED MINOR OR THAT RESULTED IN MINOR INTERACTIONS WITH POLICE THAT WOUND UP IN INCARCERATIONS . SHE STATES "I DO NOT GO AROUND USING WORDS LIKE "BLUE FASCISM" BUT IT HAS BEEN A VERY LONG TIME SINCE I THOUGHT OF A COP AS A FRIEND IN BLUE." ANOTHER INSIGHTFUL ARTICLE IS BY DICK GREGORY, COMEDIENNE TURNED RADICAL ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE CULTURE N THE BLACK COMMUNITY FROM TOLERANCE, TO PROTEST, TO REVOLT AND REVOLUTION ESPECIALLY IN THE YOUTH OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY. THERE IS A BIOGRAPHICAL ARTICLE ENTITLED "HUBERT HORATIO HUMPHREY" BY STEWART ALSOP. FINALLY WILLIAM SAROYAN PROVIDES A LONG AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ARTICLE ON HIS ENCOUNTERS WITH SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS IN HIS LIFE. THE ARTICLE IS ENTITLED "BEST WISHES TO A FORMER MISTRESS AND CARL SANDBURG AND A DEAD ARMENIAN AND OTHER PEOPLE." THE ARTICLE IS FILLED WITH AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL INSIGHT INTO HIS LIFE AS A WRITER.
