The Shuttle-Craft Book of American Hand-Weaving; Being an Account of the Rise, Development, Eclipse, and Modern Revival of a National Popular Art Together with Information of Interest and Value to Collectors, Technical Notes for the Use of Weavers. "Weaving is essentially a simple matter, requiring no special talents or high degree of manual skill for its accomplishment. If it seems complicated at first, this is only because there are so many ways to weave." This is Mrs. Atwater's philosophy, and her instructions are so clear and easy to follow, and so copiously illustrated, that she indeed makes weaving, even of elaborate, intricate designs, seem simple. Furthermore, her own enthusiasm for the craft is so infectious that anyone who merely glances through her book will want to begin a new project herself, whether she is an expert or novice. From an initial chapter on the origins and development of weaving-how and in what form it carne into this country, how it declined as an American art, and its current revival-she proceeds to teach the actual elements of handweaving: equipment and materials, design and fabric, warp-setting, color and pattern, setting up the loom, adjustments, knots, plain and twill weaves, the four-harness overshot weave. She outlines weaves for summer and for winter, the "spot" or "Bronson" weave, double weaving, leno, rug-making, pick-up weaving, and various finishes. Native weaves introduced from Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, and the American Southwest are also In addition to 72 working charts, there are hundreds of photographs throughout the volume showing the most beautiful designs: the ancient Whig Rose, the modern Twenty-Five Snowballs, Tennessee Trouble, the Walls of Jericho, Lee's Surrender, and many others. Also illustrated are coverlets and furniture covered in hand-woven fabric, both shown in their proper setting. MARY MEIGS ATWATER, lecturer-writerteacher, is the author of Byways in Hand-Weaving.
