Riassunto: Fixing up a cabin in San Joaquin Valley to ease her aching heart, Claire Sharples is enlisted in a local environmental cause against loggers who are decimating the area's ancient sequoias, and, in the process, she stumbles upon a dangerous mystery. Reprint. PW. "
Review: When Marcy Hobbes is talking, which is most of the time, the arrogant environmentalist who eventually gets knocked off in Rebecca Rothenberg's The Shy Tulip Murders produces such an impervious "wall of sound" that she leaves Rothenberg's microbiologist-sleuth Claire Sharples feeling like "a big anonymous ear." Claire sneaks a look to see if Marcy is "practicing circular breathing like a jazz flutist: in through the nose, out through the mouth."
In the third of Rothenberg's sharp, engaging "botanical mysteries," t he smugness of some environmentalists gets an entertaining drubbing, even as the author makes her exacting case for the cause itself. Trained at MIT and working as a University of California agricultural extension agent in the San Joaquin Valley, Sharples is the mouthpiece for one of the freshest, most gracefully modulated voices in crime fiction. With 40 just around the bend, Sharples is a woman "lucky in work and unlucky in love, a pattern that never registered on the geologic time line but that seemed to her every bit as significant and inexorable as the stately drift and bump of continents across the aeons."
A "tall, strapping" plain-looking woman who has recently broken up wi th Sam Cooper--"first-rate botanist, second-rate human"--Sharples likes men in general and sexy Will Brecker in particular. He is garrulous Marcy's boyfriend, however, and Sharples guiltily waits until Marcy expires from a suspicious head injury before she makes her move with Brecker. With him, her luck with men does not improve at all.
Sharples does, however, solve two murders involving members of Friend s of the Redwoods, a group trying to save a stand of sequoias from a rapacious logging company that flouts the rules on cutting. The preservationists hope to use the discovery of a rare wildflower, the "shy" Mariposa tulip, to block the logger. But then the flowers themselves begin to vanish, and Marcy is silenced
Hard as Rothenberg is on the blinkered self-righteousness of the Marc y Hobbeses of the West--and sympathetic as she is to rural people who need logging jobs to survive--she's at her most acerbic on nature's despoilers and the way popular culture sentimentalizes the worst of thme Paul Bunyan, she writes, "clear-cut his way across a continent and into the hearts of schoolchildren." Sharples watches "Johnny Appleseed" on the Disney Channel; she had remembered the movie as "sweet and insipid," but it turns out to be "about a walking ecological disaster, some nut with a tin-pan hat and a compulsion to replace the genetically diverse native trees of North America with a single European species," the apple.
This is brainy, opinionated, enjoyable mystery writing, with one of the most believable heroines to show up in years. -- Washington Post, May 19, 1996
