From Library Journal:
A first novel by the author of the play Hadrian VII , this old-fashioned, often tedious work contains more fact than fiction. Harry Smith, an English officer in Portugal and Spain, takes part in battles and engages in a courtship with Juanita, a 14-year-old Spanish girl who becomes his wife. The Duke of Wellington walks in and out of the book, and the climactic Battle of Waterloo is followed by an epilogue detailing the lives of the major real-life characters, including Harry. The profusion of names is often frustrating, and the background of the Peninsular War is never fully utilized except for interesting asides on battlefield etiquette and camp followers. Little more than a series of vignettes that suffer from abrupt shifts in narrative, this will have extremely limited appeal. Robert H. Donahugh, P.L. of Youngstown and Mahoning Cty., Ohio
