Titolo: A Fine Signed Photograph (SP) Together with ...
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: An outstandingly fine framed black and white photograph of Harold Macmillan, signed by him in ink on the mount. The photographed is framed with glass on both sides with the rear featuring a letter from his Assistant Personal Secretary (Marian Birch ?) to Sir William Urton MBE TD. Dated December 2 1963, it reads ‘Dear Sir William, Mr Macmillan has asked me to send you, as a small memento, the enclosed photograph in deep appreciation of all the time you worked with him during his term of office. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Twice serving as Conservative Prime Minister from 1957-63, Macmillan’s premiership coincided with a booming global economy and a dramatic rise in living standards leading to his famously saying in 1957, ‘You’ve never had it so good’. Given the nickname ‘Supermac’, when asked what constituted the greatest challenge in politics, he is reputed to have replied ‘Events, my dear boy, events!’. Sir William Urton served as General Director of Conservative Central Office from Aug 1957 - June 1966, effectively responsible for the smooth running of the central party machine throughout virtually all of Macmillan’s time in office. The date of the letter is significant as it comes less than 2 months after Macmillan had stepped down from office on 18th October 1963 after he was misdiagnosed with prostate cancer. DETAILED CONDITION REPORT : Photograph measures 7.5 inches x 9.5 inches and is attached to a white mount measuring 10.5 inches x 12.5 inches which Macmillan has signed with his autograph in ink underneath the photograph. Photograph is framed and glazed both sides with the rear featuring the typed letter to Sir William Urton on House of Commons letterhead paper measuring 7.5 inches by 9.5 inches. Both the photograph and the letter are in outstandingly fine condition. ALL ITEMS SOLD BY ‘A PIECE OF HISTORY’ CARRY A LIFETIME GUARANTEE OF AUTHENTICITY.
