Riassunto: In Southeast Asia: The Diversity Dilemma, Sree Kumar and Sharon Siddique describe how intra-regional contradictions and external forces are shaping the region. In Southeast Asia, diversity is a dilemma. Sometimes, it is a critical asset, while at other times, it is a grave liability. This book explains how Southeast Asians are solving the conundrum of evolving a regional identity while continually absorbing external influences. Part One examines the intra-regional concerns, covering issues of identity, efforts at developing common economic growth areas and the evolving nature of ASEAN and Southeast Asian-style institutions of governance. Part Two traces the impact of external forces on internal regional dynamics, analysing Southeast Asia's relationship to the rising powers - India and China, the continuing influences of the former colonial powers and the region's complex chemistry with Japan and the Middle East.

L'autore: Sree Kumar and Sharon Siddique are directors of Sreekumar Siddique & Co., a regional research consulting firm established in 1993. Based in Singapore, the company provides customized research, consulting services and private briefings for company boards, senior managers, and public policy officials. Mr Kumar's areas of specialisation include economic, financial and demographic analyses, project feasibility studies and risk assessments. Dr Siddique is a noted authority on Islam and socio-cultural change in Southeast Asia. She consults on urban industrial and social restructuring and political risk analysis. They have both published extensively in various newspapers, magazines and journals. Two of their most recent books are Mind the Gaps: Singapore Business in China (2005) and The Second ASEAN Reader (2004).
