"Fourth Edition, Revised and Considerably Enlarged." Prize binding with gilt emblem of North Eastern County School on front cover. Brown full leather binding with gilt decorations on spine and gilt lettering on dark red spine label. Gilt florets and dentelles decorate the edges of the covers. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Main color of the marbling is blue. 6" x 8 3/4." 452 pages, complete. Many illustrations and six plates, complete. Most are in black-and-white, a few of the illustrations and plates are in color. A couple of the plates are in color and fold out. List of Illustrations in front. Index in back. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for slight age toning and occasional wear to the corners. Covers are very clean and intact except for slightly bumped corners, slight edge wear, some rubbing and scratch marks to front and back, and slight wear to head and tail of spine. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. A comprehensive book about spectrum analysis. Replete with accompanying figures, plates, and diagrams. A beautiful frontispiece (a chromolithograph, though still in black-and-white) shows a total solar eclipse that was seen over Egypt in 1882. A sampling of the plates and illustrations includes two color folding plates showing the spectra of alkaline metals and of celestial bodies including stars and nebulae. The Preface to the Fourth Edition: "In preparing this wholly revised and almost entirely rewritten Edition of the Lectures on Spectrum Analysis no effort has been spared to give a popular and concise account of the most important discoveries in this branch of science which have been made since the year 1873. Care has been taken, in so doing, to select such portions of this wide subject as have already been worked out with approximate completeness. Many questions of rising interest have thus necessarily been omitted as not lending themselves in the present state of our knowledge, to popular treatment. Even whilst these pages have passed through the press several new discoveries have been made. Of these the outbreak of the new star in Andromeda, and the researches of Crookes, Lecoq de Boisbaudran, and Von Welsbach on the spectra of the rare metals Didymium and Samarium are perhaps the most important.
