At the request of a US Senate committee relayed through the Department of Energy, a board of the National Research Council formed the Committee on the Future of Supercomputing and charged it with assessing the state of US supercomputing capabilities and relevant research and development. After hearing testimony from government officials, academic researchers, manufacturers, software vendors, supercomputing center managers, and application users, it found that the progress of supercomputing in the US has slowed in recent years as attention has turned to other areas of science and engineering.
