Presentation Eton prize binding in full calf with gilt borders to boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting green morocco title label, gilt. Inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Eton prize inscription with handwritten name. Some wear to extremities and foxing of fly leaves; otherwise a very good clean copy. Armourial bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead. Decorated by title page, head and tailpiece vignettes, initials and colophon. The six comedies of Terence, Publius Terentius Afer (c.195/185-c.159 BC), Roman playwright possibly of North African origin. The plays were very popular as Latin texts in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods and also influenced Shakespeare and his contemporaries. This handsome edition was especially printed for Eton College prize giving under the direction of the editor, Charles Old Goodford (1812-84), Provost of Eton. The copy was owned by F. E. Smith, later 1st Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930), notable barrister and Conservative politician, holding high office. He held the title Viscount (between those of Baron and Earl), 1921-22.
