Riassunto: Dream by dream shot through her eyes, and each Outshone the last that lighted. SWINBURNE. MIDNIGHT, without darkness, without stars !M idnight, and the unwearied sun stood, yet visible in the heavens, like a victorious king throned on a dais of royal purple bordered with gold. The sky above him, his canopy, gleamed with a cold yet lustrious blue, while across it slowly flitted a few wandering clouds of palest amber, deepening, as they sailed along, to a tawny orange. A broad stream of light falling, as it were, from the centre of the magnificent orb, shot lengthwise across the A ltenfjord, turning its waters to a mass of quivering and shifting color that alternated from bronfce to copper, from copper to silver and azure. The surrounding hills glowed with a warm, deep violet tint, flecked here and there with touches of bright red, as though fairies were lighting tiny bonfires on their summits. A way in the distance a huge mass of rock stood out to view, its rugged lines transfigured into ethereal loveliness by a misty veil of tender rose pink, a hue curiously suggestive of some other and smaller sun that might have just set. Absolute silence prevailed. Not even the cry of a sea-mew or kittiwake broke the almost deathlike stillness, no breath of wind stirred a ripple on the glassy water. The whole scene might well have been the fantastic dream of some imaginative painter, whose ambition soared beyond the limits of human skill.

About the Author: Marie Corelli 1 May 1855 - 21 April 1924) was a British novelist. She enjoyed a period of great literary success from the publication of her first novel in 1886 until World War I. Corelli's novels sold more copies than the combined sales of popular contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling, although critics often derided her work as "the favorite of the common multitude. Mary Mackay was born in London to Elizabeth Mills, a servant of the Scottish poet and songwriter Dr. Charles Mackay, her biological father. In 1866, eleven-year-old Mary was sent to a Parisian convent to further her education. She returned to Britain four years later in 1870. Mackay began her career as a musician, adopting the name Marie Corelli for her billing. Eventually she turned to writing and published her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds, in 1886. In her time, she was the most widely read author of fiction. Her works were collected by Winston Churchill, Randolph Churchill, and members of the British Royal Family, among others. Mackay faced criticism from the literary elite for her overly melodramatic writing. In the Spectator, Grant Allen called her "a woman of deplorable talent who imagined that she was a genius, and was accepted as a genius by a public to whose commonplace sentimentalities and prejudices she gave a glamorous setting." James Agate represented her as combining "the imagination of a Poe with the style of an Ouida and the mentality of a nursemaid." A recurring theme in Corelli's books is her attempt to reconcile Christianity with reincarnation, astral projection, and other mystical ideas. Her books were a part of the foundation of today's New Age religion. Her portrait was painted by Helen Donald-Smith.

Descrizione libro Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Thelma: A Norwegian Princess is one of noted author Marie Corelli s first books. Corelli was a very popular writer of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, and enjoyed recognition as one of the most widely read authors of the day alongside H.G. Wells and Rudyard Kipling. This book allows the modern reader to enjoy the work of an often-overlooked great author. Thelma: A Norwegian Princess is a classic story about a forbidden love. Told over the course of three books, all included in this collection, the principal characters are Thelma Guldmar, a poor girl from an outcasted family, and Sir Philip-Bruce Errington, a member of a royal family. Guldmar s father is a pagan and she is a Catholic, which brings accusations of witchdom against the young girl from the largely Lutheran population. Corelli s style is accessible to all, which is something her work is often critiqued for. The subtext does not reach the depths in this novel as it does in many works that are considered on par with. However this does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book and only the strictest of critics will be disappointed. Ultimately, Thelma: A Norwegian Princess is a lovely read for those both familiar and new to her writing. A very worthwhile read, for a much under-appreciated author.
