Riassunto: Itching to do something different, eighteen-year-old Sarah leaves Maine for the harsh Montana environment as a mail-order bride, and is soon left a widow with a 2000-acre ranch to run.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up A historical novel, set in the 1880s, with a strong, determined female main character. Sarah, 18, has no prospects for marriage in Maine so she answers a newspaper ad from a widowed rancher in Montana who is seeking "a wife of docile temper." Upon arrival, she learns that Alex is no longer the young, handsome man in the picture he sent her, but rather white-haired and about 60 years old. But before long Alex discovers that he also was misled: Sarah is anything but docile. Harsh weather conditions and adjusting to new people, some of whom are hostile, are difficult, but Sarah is a survivor. When Alex is killed in an accident only a few weeks after their marriage, Sarah decides to run the ranch herself, despite her neighbor's warning that "ranching ain't for ladies." This is a beautifully written book, with descriptive poetic language and wonderful touches of humor. Sarah is a richly drawn, intriguing character. Turner deals with Sarah's introduction to sex delicately but honestly, referring to it in the euphemisms of the day"the trials of a wife. . .this night business." The only flaw is a contrived encounter between Sarah and her heroine, Calamity Jane. Sarah, Plain and Tall (Harper, 1985) by Patricia MacLachlan has a similar plot but is intended for younger readers. Candy Bertelson, Multnomah County Library, Portland, Oreg.
