Tutti i diritti riservati.: Taken from Chapter 6: The dining room The dumbwaiter When the kitchen was still in the basement and the dining room was upstairs, food had to be carried quite a distance before it reached the table. A dumbwaiter transported meals quickly and easily. A dumbwaiter is a shelf that moves up and down a long tunnel chute. Using a system of ropes and pulleys, a servant hoisted dinner up to the dining room. It was then placed on the dinner wagon and served at the table. The dirty dishes were later returned to the kitchen on the dumbwaiter.
