Review copy with the publisherÕs printed notice laid in. Bookplate of literary editor, publisher, and art collector, Scofield Thayer (1889 - 1982), affixed to the front pastedown, depicting a ripe pomegranate split open to reveal its cache of seeds above a banner which reads ÒSub Cortice DulcedoÓ. Illustrated. Fine bright copy in a very good plus dust jacket with a faint trace of dust soiling and a few tiny nicks and tears. A collection of writings on the subject of art and aesthetics. Scofield Thayer came from a prominent Massachusetts family, with the added distinction of being the nephew of Ernest Thayer, the author of the well-known baseball poem ÒCasey at the BatÓ. Scofield Thayer was drawn to artistic and literary circles, and cultivated friendships with such distinguished writers as E.E. Cummings (who later became openly and intimately involved with ThayerÕs wife, Elaine Eliot Orr, and is considered to have fathered a daughter with her while she was still married to Thayer), T.S. Eliot (with whom he attended Milton Academy in 1905), Ezra Pound, Bertrand Russell, Gilbert Seldes, George Santayana (one of ThayerÕs teachers), etc. Thayer became involved with the literary quarterly magazine, The Dial, initially as a financial backer, and eventually as a director and vice-president of the new New York Dial Corporation, as well as an associate editor. In addition to his literary pursuits, Thayer amassed an impressive collection of modern art, including works by Picasso, Matisse, Beardsley, Chagall, Schiele, Munch, Derain, Demuth, Klimt, and others, some of which appeared as illustrations in The Dial.
